Having won our first horse race with Dormston Boyo, the Boyo flock was established in 2001 with Charollais purchases from Robert Gregory, John Davis and the late Percy Tate.
The Charollais have since grown to be the strongest breed within the flocks and now numbers 35 breeding females.
Sale success has seen a top of 3400gns at the Worcester Premier Sale, with many private sales happening off farm to a top of £10,000 to Northern Ireland.
Showing has always been a vital part of our shop window and the Charollais have certainly brought home the rosettes. Notable successes include a flock favourite, Gin and Tonic, who won the Royal Show three times. Other show championships include the Royal Welsh, Newport and Three Counties.
Throughout the years we have also dabbled in breeding Beltex with foundation females coming from David Gardner, Jock Allan and Sara Gibbons. Beltex breed championships have happened locally at Newport Show, as well as a phenomenal result in 2006 when we clinched the breed championship with the Beltex at the Royal Welsh.
A flock of Blue Texel sheep was introduced in 2016 for my nieces Chloe and Ellie to enjoy on the farm. Early purchases came from Whatmore with subsequent females bought from Misserden and Stonycroft. Show ring successes were again achieved with a breed and reserve interbreed championship win at the Three Counties Show in 2018 with a Whatmore-bred shearling ewe.
As a breed hot in demand for females, we’ve been fortunate to have success via online sales selling Boyo Frankie to Northern Ireland for £7550, a tup lamb Boyo Freddie at 2000gns at Worcester and various females privately.
As the Dutch Spotted breed came into favour, the first imported females were purchased in 2018 and in 2021 at the Worcester Spotacular Sale, one of our imported females set the new breed record of 20,000gns selling to Jonathan and Janet Corbett of the Wedderburn flock.
The Spottie flock remains small with embryo transfer work carried out to produce sale females. New bloodlines were introduced in 2021 at the winter in-lamb female sale at Worcester with the purchase of a Diamond-bred female purchased from Wedderburn.
